  1. c. 1552-1599. English poet, who has been
  2. called the `poet's poet' because of his rich
  3. imagery and command of versification. He is
  4. known for his moral allegory The Faerie
  5. Queene, of which six books survive (three
  6. published 1590 and three 1596). Other books
  7. include The Shepheard's Calendar 1579,
  8. Astrophel 1586, the love sonnets Amoretti and
  9. the Epithalamion 1595. Born in London and
  10. educated at Cambridge, in 1580 he became
  11. secretary to the Lord Deputy in Ireland and
  12. at Kilcolman Castle completed the first three
  13. books of The Faerie Queene. In 1598 Kilcolman
  14. Castle was burned down by rebels, and Spenser
  15. with his family narrowly escaped. He died in
  16. London, and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
